On 21st April, on the scenic Prabhadevi Beach in Mumbai, real estate developer Rustomjee collaborated with Mumbai Ploggers to celebrate Earth Day. Teaming up with Mumbai Ploggers, Rustomjee led the beach cleanup drive, not only enhancing the beach’s beauty but also spreading awareness about the need to fight plastic pollution.

This year’s theme for Earth Day, “Planet vs Plastics,” by Earthday.org, aimed to address the issue of plastic waste. Advocating for a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040, the focus is on raising awareness about the health risks associated with plastics, particularly single-use plastics. It includes the rapid phasing out of single-use plastics and the push for a robust UN Treaty on plastic pollution.

Committed to sustainability and community welfare, Rustomjee organised this beach clean-up drive on the occasion of World Earth Day.

Why Rustomjee Chose This Initiative

The Prabhadevi Beach cleanup comes as a response to one of the world’s most pressing global problems–plastic pollution.

The cleanup drive reflects the company’s inclination towards environmental sustainability. Realising the amount of harm that construction can do to natural systems, Rustomjee wants to set an example for others by showing the importance of environmental protection.

Details of the CleanUp Drive Event

As many as 34 volunteers took part in this 90-minute clean-up drive. Among them were employees from Rustomjee who wanted to stand as drivers of environmental protection. Mumbai Ploggers – a community group known for their frequent environmental initiatives also joined the event.

Everything from discarded plastic bags and snack wrappers to straws and beverage bottles was the main focus of the clean-up. In the end, 48 kg of garbage was successfully collected. It was sorted carefully into recyclables and non-recyclables with help from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) guidelines. The separated garbage was then handed over to the BMC team who ensured proper disposal.

Impact of the Prabhadevi Beach Cleanup Event

The event left an indelible mark on both the environment and the participants involved. At the Prabhadevi beach, where once there was a scattering of plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other debris, there now lay stretches of clean sand and unobstructed views of the ocean. More than 48 kgs of waste collected by the volunteers were sent to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, a goal that Rustomjee and Mumbai Ploggers are proud to achieve.

Testimonials From Volunteers and Participants

Rustomjee employees and members of Mumbai Ploggers shared heartfelt accounts of their experiences.

One of the volunteers mentioned, “I came for the drive to inspire my friends community and the society to make a larger impact on the planet.”

Another participant applauded the drive and reflected, “The whole initiative was behind a motive that Earth is the only place we can live in, and this is the only home we can save.”

One of the participants emphasised the importance of cleaning activities and said, “It’s very important to act like it is Earth Day every day because every small thing that you do—the way you keep your house clean, your office clean, your environment clean; that will really create an impact and have a better Earth and planet around you. So that should be practised by each and every one.”

Spirit of Community and Environmentalism Promoted by the Drive

The Prabhadevi Beach cleanup was more than a garbage removal campaign. It was about awareness, community participation, and increasing ecological consciousness.

Furthermore, these events make residents proud of their neighbourhoods and take care of them better. The energy and positive attitude displayed by participants during cleanups were overwhelming – many volunteers expressed willingness to be involved in future environmental projects immediately afterwards.

Reflections and Future Commitments

The event’s success was driven by active participation as well as real results. In light of this achievement, Rustomjee is more determined than ever before to grow its sustainability undertakings. The next event, in collaboration with Mumbai Ploggers, is set to take place at Versova Beach.

On 19th May, ‘Cleanup Drive 2.0’ will be organised at Versova Beach on account of World Environment Day. Rustomjee and Mumbai Ploggers look forward to the active participation of the communities in this open-to-all event. Rustomjee believes in long-term changes and creating a healthier planet because it is indeed a shared responsibility.

Recognising the area’s littered condition, the team has planned to lead by example to restore Versova’s beauty and preserve its natural environment. Let’s keep the ball rolling. Join the #Thoughtfulfortheplanet campaign and make a difference.

Giving Back to the Planet – Sustainability Beyond Structures

The importance of involving communities in environmental conservation is the need of the hour. Rustomjee thanks all the participants for their contribution towards creating a cleaner, greener world.

The company expresses its gratitude to the spirited Mumbai Ploggers, its committed team, and all other volunteers who came to Prabhadevi Beach during the cleanup exercise.

“Let’s carry on with Earth Day all year round and safeguard our planet one step at a time. Here’s to hoping we become more considerate towards our world.”
